2.This paper analyzes the disadvantages of conventional way of calculating the subwater topography change in coastal engineering planning,introduces the main components of Geographic Information System (GIS) and gives an example of application of GIS in subwater topography calculation. In the analysis of subwater topography change in the area of Zhoushan Fishery Harbour in Zhejiang Province,three Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) of the area under study for 1962,1987 and 1996 are developed respectively using GIS software ARC/INFO,and the change of depth and the corresponding change of area and volume are calculated for the periods from 1962 to 1987 and from 1987 to 1996,providing a solid basis for the environmental analysis of the fishery harbour.
